I Really Am a Dork
The Times has a very interesting article about Daniel Cassidy, author of a book on Irish slang in NYC. Cassidy's contention is that many slang words in use today derive from Celtic words used by Irish immigrants.

The article is a good read, but I question some of his assertions. "Twerp" has an Irish derivation? Sounds more Yiddish to me. Interesting article nonetheless.
Comments:
Yes, his work leaves too much to be desired. I've written a summary of the very large problems with his work here.
