No News From Hofstra
Jets coach Herm Edwards was supposed to have hunkered down with his staff yesterday to determine who would be the starter for the rest of the season (assuming neither Fiedler nor Pennington will return). In the statement I read, Edwards said the it was important for the team to have stability at the position. Base10 agrees. Unfortunately, the media has already anointed Vinny Testaverde to be that guy. As of this morning, there is still no word. Base10 is hoping there'll be some sort of press conference later today.
On the stadium front, it looks like the idea of the Jets coming back to the city is not in the cards. After the collapse of the deal to bring Gang Green to the west side, the Jets did have some communication with the Queens Borough President on developing a stadium in Flushing Meadows. That deal appears dead. The Jets have reportedly agreed to a joint venture with the Giants to build an $800 million stadium in the Meadowlands. The stadium will be part of the Xanadu sports complex and supposedly will have a rail link (certainly a good thing). Base10 knew Flushing was not ever really in the cards. While there was some political support, it was lukewarm at best.
One can only hope that the new deal will fall through and Bloomberg tries to resurrect the west side project if he's re-elected.
In other football news, the Packers suffered a painful loss last night against a strong Carolina squad. The Pack is now 0-4. Brett, it's time to contemplate retirement.
During the game, Packers wide receiver Terrence Murphy got slammed when he picked up a muffed kick and tried to run with it. Murphy did not appear to be moving when he was taken off the field. Reports this morning are that he is hospitalizes at least for one day. Base10's prayers go out to the young man and his family.
