No Joy in Mudville

Base10's beloved Jets got creamed by Baltimore yesterday losing 13-3. What can one say? The third string quarterback ran an ineffective offense? And yet... The Jets defense looked great and they were on the field for practically the whole game. Indeed, they set up the Jets only scoring opportunity by stripping the ball off of Anthony Wright. Special teams were okay. Ben Graham, the former Australian rules football player and current punter, once again looked outstanding.

It's the offense. And it's not even all Bollinger. It is obvious that they wanted to keep the ball on the ground. But in the first half it was almost predictable: run, run, pass on third-and-long. I thought that Bollinger, when he did throw, actually did play within himself.

What do you do? Keep Bollinger or put in Vinny? I realize that to long time fans there is some comfort in giving Vinny the keys. Heck, if you're going to take that long drive down the road to ignominy it's to have an old friend like Vinny at the wheel.

Base10 disagrees with that assessment. Sticking Vinny in there would at best lead to an 8-8 season. I say leave Bollinger in there for the season and see what he can do. You just might have a diamond in the rough there. While he didn't play well enough to win yesterday, he did play well enough to get another shot.

Meanwhile, our crosstown cousins, the New York Giants creamed the high-powered St. Louis Rams 44-24. Base10 suspects that Eli Manning's X-factor gene is finally becoming active and as his mutant power he seems to have the ability to throw touchdown passes in impossible situations.

In other games of note, the defending champs in New England were stomped by the as-yet win-less San Diego Chargers 41-17. While Base10 doesn't think you can count New England out, this is a very inauspicious sign. In another good game, Philly overcame a double digit deficit to defeat the Chiefs 37-31. (Alliteration must be free today).

Tonight's MNF game features the best match up between losing teams: Carolina and the Packers. Base10 will be watching.
