Closing Note
Base10 will be a bit busy at work this week so posting may be quite limited. He will try to do something this evening, but promises nothing. Meanwhile, here are some things to read about:
- Slashdot reports that the Wikipedia--the free and publicly editable encyclopedia has over 90 million words and 300,000 articles.
- International Police Officers are being sought for Iraq and Afghanistan. The positions pay over $100,000 per year and it seems like all expenses are paid. Plus, earning are tax free if you reside out of the US for 330 days out of the year. Base10 has been threatening to go to Iraq as a bargaining position with Mrs. Base10 on several issues. Unfortunately, she's not completely opposed to the idea.
- The New York Mets won against Philly. Pitcher Al Leiter had a nice outing. They are still contending, but Base10 thinks they need to at least split this series. If they win the next two even better, because then they face three games against the Marlins before the All-Star break.
- The Times reports an increase in road cycling. The Times believes the reasons for road cycling's increased appeal is due to aging baby boomers no longer able to run and the popularity of Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France. Base10 himself is a road convert and remembers when mountain bikes were all one saw on the street. It's nice to see more road bikes. But bear in mind, mountain biking is extremely strenuous as well, and off-road riding has an appeal unlike anything you can do on the road.
- In the incredibly obvious department, a study notes that the percentage of immigrant cab drivers is on the rise.
- John Kerry has announced that Senator John Edwards will be his running mate. In a major gaffe, the New York Post reported that Gephardt, not Edwards, would be getting the nod. They humorously acknowledged their mistake on the front page today.
- Mayor Mike is defending officers involved in a shooting in Brooklyn. Responding cops shot at a robbery suspect after he left a Payless shoe store carrying a realistic looking toy gun. Unfortunately, the officer's shot missed and struck a 12 year-old disabled boy in a wheelchair. According to the Mayor,
The real culprit here is not the police officer, [but] the crook who has robbed the store. Let's get serious and focus on that. Police have to make a decision at any instant in time whether the perp has a gun, is threatening their lives and others and then they've got to act on it. It's very easy to look after the fact.
Let's not forget this if there are other racially charged shootings this summer.
