Times Select and Proquest

Some collegues have informed me that the NY Times pay-to-read op-ed system has gone online. Base10 will never pay the New York Times for the privelege of reading the likes of Maureen Dowd, Bob Herbert and Paul Krugman. So if he does feel the need to make his bile rise, he will just head over to Proquest to do it for free. Here's what you need:
1. A working library card for a library with Proquest access. Base10 uses the Brooklyn Public Library for this purpose. The Brooklyn Library gives you same-day access to the Times. Not all libraries do this. Not all libraries give you home access either. You can also check your academic institution's library for the service.
2. Log on to your library's web site. Go to the Proquest portal. (For BPL it's under electronic resources).
3. Search "New York Times."
4. You will get several options including the ability to browse the publication. Select that one.
5. You will be presented with a list of dates. Sellect the most recent.
6. You are now seeing all the articles in the times on that date. I sort by page if I'm looking for the op-eds because they tend to be at the end of the "A" section.
7. Browse page-by-page until you hit them and voila, free op-eds.

Remember, it's not as if you are getting this for free. Your tax dollars subsidize the library. The problem is that you can't link to the article. Here's a link to today's article by economist/Democratic Party hack Paul Krugman. The best thing about doing it this way is that you don't have to see the goofy grayscale photos of Krugman, et al. Alas, you need to login to use it.
